Wonder if it works on dial-up. You'll also notice, if you try a few queries, that it doesn't work well for various searches. It worked about half the time for me. But it's an interesting idea!

I checked the source code. It appears to have a timer; if you stop typing for X milliseconds it does a "silent" query in the background and displays the #1 result. Interesting stuff. It tends to choke if you aren't looking for something very common. "Kate" finds the KDE Advanced Text Editor project :)
