Gmail's Delete Shortcut

I have been complaining for a while that Gmail has just about every keyboard shortcut under the sun except the shortcut to delete email. Well, Andrew recently forwarded me a Lifehacker post that says otherwise. There actually is one, but it seems to be kept secret.

So for anyone who may care, the keyboard shortcut is shift + 3 (or the # key).

Hooray!

I know you think I'm ridiculous for my conspiracy theories, but this whole delete thing is the major reason I'm skeptical of gmail. It seems they don't want you to delete anything. They hide the delete function so that your entire online history remains available to them in their databases.

If they can find out what you talk about, then they can sell your information to companies trying to market to you. It's a capitalist conspiracy man, I'm telling you.

You are such a conspiracy theorist. Have you seen that movie? Conspiracy Theory? With Mel Gibson? It's a good one.

Anyway, I've been informed that Gmail most likely doesn't make the delete option super-easy because it's too much effort for them to actually delete the data. They probably do something that is more like just scratching it out, but not reusing the space. I don't really understand it, but it's what the computer-smart people tell me. :)

Apparently you should be afraid of Yahoo too now, according to a CNN Money.com story. They are offering unlimited email storage so their users have "no reason to ever have to delete old e-mails", according to co-founder David Filo.
